Computer monitors have always been ahead of the curve compared to TVs when it comes to new technology. This continues to be true with the release of Sharp's PN-K321, which is a 31.5-inch professional LED monitor with a jaw-dropping resolution of 3840x2160 pixels.

Even though Ultra HD movies are a long way off, especially for Australia, there are still plenty of uses for an Ultra HD computer monitor. Imagine seeing your digital SLR's photos with four times the detail of your current monitor, or editing video from a professional 4K video camera.

Technically the Sharp PN-K321's resolution is Quad Full High Definition, but it's exactly the same -- 3840 pixels wide and 2160 pixels tall in a 16:9 aspect ratio.Beyond that, the PN-K321 is interesting because a specially-designed edge LED backlight means the entire display is only 35mm deep, making it the thinnest small Ultra HD screen on the market.

The 31.5-inch Sharp Ultra HD screen is based on the company's IGZO technology, meaning smaller transistors and other electronic components that allow vastly more pixels per square inch than existing TFT LCD designs.

The Sharp PN-K321 has DisplayPort and HDMI 1.4a connectors, both of which can operate at its native resolution. It's meant to be used in high-end graphic design and computer-aided design studios, in medical imaging, or in very premium digital signage locations -- think airports or designer department stores.
