The new Whitewater 3010 storage gateway from Riverbed Technologies will help companies cope with fast-growing backup workloads without resorting to tape storage, the company announced Monday.

According to Riverbed, the Whitewater 3010 will offer more than four times the disk capacity and double the RAM of the next largest model in the Whitewater lineup, the 2010. This means that the new model packs a grand total of 48TB of raw storage space and 64GB of memory. In the Whitewater line's usual RAID-6 configuration, that means there's 32TB of effective deduplicated storage space available for backup.
Like its predecessors, the Whitewater 3010 is a 3U device -- however, its beefed-up hardware makes it significantly heavier and more power-hungry than earlier Whitewater modules. The 3010 tips the scales at 71 pounds, compared to the 2010 at 64 pounds, and demands an average of 650 watts, up from 530 W for the earlier model.
The 3010 is available immediately, and starts at $138,000.
What's more, Riverbed adds that the latest version, 2.0, of the company's Whitewater OS can support up to 160TB of deduplicated cloud storage -- essential for today's increasingly cloud-dependent enterprise IT departments.
"Enterprises now have the capacity, enhanced performance, management features, and security they need to cost-efficiently and seamlessly send and store backup and infrequently used archival data off-site to public and private storage clouds," Whitewater Cloud Storage General Manager Ray Villeneuve said in a statement.
Whitewater OS 2.0 also boasts 50% faster ingest performance, allowing the system to take in more data quickly, as well as new remote management features and a centralized dashboard from which the system can be monitored and tweaked, the company said. Additionally, the system can be integrated into Windows Active Directory.
