A new optic fibre submarine cable system which will link Perth with Singapore is expected to have a capacity of 6.4 terabits (Tbps) per second when it is completed in 2013.
It will cover a distance of 4600 kilometres with capacity delivered through 40 gigabits (Gbps) per second technology, which could be upgraded to 100 Gbps in the future. Construction is slated for the first quarter of 2012.
Developed by ASSC-1 Communications Group, the submarine cable will comprise three express fibre pairs between Perth and Singapore, and one omnibus fibre pair between Perth, Jakarta and Singapore.
Telstra has agreed to purchase one of the four fibre pairs from ASSC-1's fibre optic submarine cable and provide landing party services in Perth.
Huawei Marine Networks, a joint venture between Huawei Technologies and Global Marine Systems, will supply and install the ASSC-1 system. Matrix Cable Systems plans to supply the Jakarta landing through its own cable landing station and work with ASSC-1 to manage the Indonesian permit process.
ASSC-1 chief executive, James Chen, said in a statement that the cable is a low latency system which will provide the fastest transfer speeds between Australia, Asia and Europe.
"We expect it to take up excess demand from the only existing cable on this route, which is the ageing SEAMEWE-3 system," he said.
"In addition, we expect to provide increased diversity for traffic from Asia to the US via Australia," he said.
Chen added that ASSC-1 will be a "carrier neutral" cable system and meet domestic and international demands by providing access to its partners and customers including tier one carriers, internet service providers (ISPs) and secondary service providers.
