Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) has teamed up with HKT to launch the city's first trial of Hotspot 2.0 Wi-Fi technology.

The trial will allow HKT customers to automatically switch between mobile and Wi-Fi networks for seamless online browsing.

Hotspot 2.0 expands on Wi-Fi technology to add auto-search, auto-network selection and auto-authentication capabilities.

Users can sign up once for a Wi-Fi service with their mobile service provider and automatically connect to a Hotspot 2.0 network when one is in range. There is no need for any apps to be installed on a user's device or for the user to undergo any additional registration.

In a statement announcing the trial, the HKSTPC said it hopes that adopting Hotspot 2.0 technology will "strengthen the position of Hong Kong as a globally recognised leading digital economy and a dominant telecommunication infrastructure hub."
