Vodafone is offering its customers the chance to use as much mobile data as they like as part of a three month trial.

The Vodafone Data Test Drive is only available to new customers that take out a pay monthly contract with their network, or existing customers that upgrade their current plan. Customers can choose from a range of 20 different existing smartphones and the network will also extend the trial to any new handsets launched on the network, including the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S, which was made available through Vodafone last week.

They are then free to surf the web, download apps, send emails and even share the data connection with other devices, so those gadgets can connect to the web (a process known as tethering) as often as they like.

Vodafone said the trial is designed to give customers the confidence to experiment with their new phone, get to grips with its features, explore all the apps that are available for it and work out their average monthly data usage.

At the end of the three month period the network will inform users of exactly how much data they've used and whether the plan they have chosen suits their needs, via text message. Vodafone will also offer an alternative if their existing plan doesn't cover their needs. They can swap to the new plan by simply texting back.

"The latest smartphones allow people to do more with their mobile phone than ever before. We want customers to really play with their new handset and Data Test Drive will give them the confidence to find the apps they love and features they will use regularly," said Srini Gopalan, consumer director, Vodafone UK.
