I'm a fan of being connected. Obviously. And I bought a Palm Treo 650 years ago so I could stay up on my work email when I'm away from my computer. But I've found that constant access to my email stresses me out. Do I really want to know there's a problem with a project when I'm about to enjoy a movie? Is there some reason I can't get that email in the morning?

According to a recent study by MIT's Sloan School of Management, I'm not alone. By looking at BlackBerry use at a certain company, the study found that constant email checking led to more stress. According to the study, 90 percent of subjects claimed they felt "some degree of compulsion”, checking their email on nights, weekends, at church, at the gym, and even when they were out socially.

The study also found that the problem stems from managers. Once higher-ups start compulsive email checking, everyone else follows suit till it becomes normal that someone will get back to you at any hour of the day.
