Sony Xperia C3 best selfie smartphone

Sony has today announced its latest smartphone, the Xperia C3 which it claims is the best in the world for taking selfie photos. See alsoThe best smartphones you can buy in 2014.

In order to claim this title, Sony has fitted the Xperia C3 with its first PROselfie camera. It's 5Mp in resolution which isn't the highest we've seen at the front of a phone, but it is the first we've seen with a front facing LED flash.

The selfie camera also has a wide-angle lens to fit more into the shot. Sony's superior auto mode is available on both cameras as well as other apps such as AR effect and Portrait Retouch.

We have no news on a UK release date or price but Sony has confirmed the Xperia C3 will launch globally in August starting in China. It will be available in three colours: black, white and mint green.

Calum MacDougall, director of Xperia marketing at Sony Mobile, said: "The rise of selfies shows no signs of abating – its usage has increased by 17,000% since 2012 with the word officially being added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013. We're excited to offer Sony’s first 'PROselfie Smartphone' and play a part in this global phenomenon."

The Xperia C3 itself is a typically Sony looking smartphone with a 5.5in HD display. It is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM and has 8GB of internal storage.

There is a microSD card slot for up to 32GB more, though. The Xperia C3 is just 7.6 mm thin and a 150 g in weight. See also: Sony Xperia Z3 release date, price and specs: New Xperia smartphone imminent.

Selfie camera aside, there is an 8Mp camera with Sony's Exmor RS sensor, HDR and pulsed LED flash. It's unsurprising that the Xperia C3 runs on Android 4.4 KitKat and we assume that it will get an upgrade to Android L later this year.
