Mobility is dominating the mindshare across IT organisations and is vital to having a digital work life, according to Citrix president and CEO, Mark Templeton.

He was speaking at the keynote session of Citrix's Synergy 2013 conference, held in Los Angeles.

Mobility a godsend and a nightmare

As a result of having discussions with many of Citrix's customers, Templeton said going mobile is top on many businesses' priority list and claimed the drivers for its growth include consumerisation, BYOD, disruptions and a generation that is born digital.

"I hear the same things over and over from CIOs -- they want to mobilise their businesses. Consumerisation affects the devices, apps, data, where people work, and even how they think about computing.

"It has led to a new workforce that needs to be recruited, retained and engaged, and let's face it; the Web is built for this generation that IT has not built for this generation. Mobilising a business is about addressing the workstyle environment to get and retain the best," he said.

Templeton also claimed the increasing number of natural disasters had deepened the need for businesses to adopt mobile technologies.

"If you add those things to teleworking, expanding globally, moving data offshore, or restructuring organisations, these are changes that are adding velocity to mobile change too," he mentioned.

Templeton said businesses need a mobile strategy in dealing in a world of uncertainty.

"It's all about having a flexible infrastructure at the desktop and in the datacentre. As a result of this, I see transformations in how people work, the reinvention of the workplace, and workforce engagement."

To do that, businesses have to start with apps in desktops, Templeton said.

Templeton suggested organisations have an infrastructure to manage the mobile lifecycle from beginning to end, have apps and data designed for business and have tools and an ecosystem that is extensible to add third party apps.

"Most people just think about mobile devices. We think there needs to be a strategy around the devices, apps and the security around it. But it's not enough to do just that. You also have to pay attention to the consumer experience," he added.

In support of Cloud and a mobile workforce, Citrix announced several enhancements to its portfolio that include the Citrix XenDestop 7, the Citric XenMobile Enterprise, as well as the Citrix ShareFile solution.

During the keynote, Templeton also handed out the Citrix Innovation Award to the University of San Paulo for being the top customer to innovate its business around Citrix's technologies.
