A Birmingham man will be the first in the UK to stand trial for harassment through Facebook.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Michael Hurst, 33, of Edgbaston has pleaded not guilty to the charge of harassing Sophie Sladden. He used the social networking site to contact former girlfriend Sophie on 21 January.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service told the Birmingham Mail: "We have prosecuted harassment cases before where people have sent letters, made phone calls, and even text messages in recent years, but to my knowledge this is the first case where a website like Facebook has been involved."
