The average UK broadband speed is four times slower than those in South Korea, which boasts the fastest connections in the world, says Akamai.
The web performance monitor's 'State of the internet report' revealed the average UK broadband speed is 3.5Mbps, with just one in 12 Brits achieving 5Mbps and above.
Akami said Britain is lagging behind when it comes to high-speed downloads, with average speeds much slower than in Belgium, the Czech Republic and Iceland.
The research also highlighted that only 81 percent of UK homes currently have a 2Mbps connection - the speed the government wants the whole of UK to receive under the proposals in its Digital Britain report. Even worse is the fact that 1.6 percent of the UK are only capable of achieving 256Kbps.
