Research by the pet insurer also revealed that 52 percent of pet owners post pictures of their furry (or feathery, or scaly) friend on social networks. Furthermore, 20 percent admit they email digital snaps of their pets to their friends and family. Women are more likely to share pictures of their pets than men, with 55 percent of females admitting to sharing images, compared to 42 percent of men.
Meanwhile, there has also been a surge in the number of social networks dedicated to pet owners, with Critter, Catster and Doggie Dating among the most popular.
"This new social petworking trend is further proof of the UK's love of their pets," said PetPlan director Neil Brettell.
"With our mutts and moggies becoming more popular than celebrities on Facebook and other social networking sites, we predict this trend is only going to get bigger."
