A US-based sociologist reckons she can determine your socio-economic class by the social-networking site you prefer.
Danah Boyd, a researcher at the University of California, interviewed teenagers in the US over a nine-month period and believes users of FaceBook come from wealthier backgrounds and are more likely to go to college, while MySpace devotees tend to go to work immediately after high school.
According to Boyd, MySpace is still home for Latino/Hispanic teens, immigrant teens, ‘burnouts’, ‘alternative kids’, ‘art fags’, ‘punks’ and ‘gangstas’, among other groups. The ‘goodie two shoes’, ‘jocks’, ‘athletes’, and other 'good' kids are now going to Facebook.
To back up her conclusions, she refers to the US military’s decision earlier this month to ban soldiers from using MySpace, but not Facebook. “Soldiers are on MySpace; officers are on Facebook,” she says.
