After launching in the US a few months ago, Amazon has brought its Kindle Unlimited service to the UK as a sort of Netflix for books. See also: Amazon launches Prime Instant Video app for Android.

Kindle Unlimited costs $9.99 per month across the pond and £7.99 per month here in blighty. The service offers unlimited access to over 650,000 e-books including the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series. Users can test it out with a free 30-day trial in the same way as Amazon Prime Instant Video.

The launch quickly follows the announcement of two new Kindle eReaders in the form of the £59 Kindle (2014) and high-end Kindle Voyage.

Jorrit Van der Meulen, vice president of Kindle EU, said: "With unlimited access to hundreds of thousands of titles, Kindle Unlimited offers by far the simplest and most cost-effective way to explore and discover eBooks and audiobooks together, and you can even switch from reading to listening without losing your place. Our US customers have shown us how much they love the opportunity to discover new authors and genres, and now we’re delighted to offer the same freedom to our customers in the UK."

Eligible titles will show a Kindle Unlimited logo mirroring the way movies and films included in the firm's Netflix rival have a Prime banner. See also: Netflix vs Amazon Prime Instant Video comparison review.

As well as regular books, subscribers will have access to more than 2,000 audiobooks from Audible. Whispersync for Voice allows users to easily switch between reading and listening. Amazon says it's the most cost-effective way to enjoy eBooks and audiobooks together.

Kindle Unlimited is accessible across Kindle devices and free Kindle reading apps for iPhone, iPad, Android tablets and smartphones, Windows Phone, PC, Mac and Windows 8 - so there's no shortage of support across today's gadgets.

Amazon is on a UK-based onslought of new products with the Fire TV, Fire Phone, new Kindle Fire HD tablets and a new Kindle Fire HDX.
