Nintendo is giving Nintendo DS owners the ability to turn their console into an electronic book reader similar to the Sony Reader.

By purchasing the £17.99 100 Classic Books Collection cartridge, which will be available from Boxing Day and includes works by Shakespere, Dickens and Jane Austin, the Nintendo DS can be held vertically just like a book.

Text will be displayed on the two 3in 256x192 touchscreens, while the stylus can then be used to flip pages, bookmark them and even search for text.

The console manufacturer also claims users will be able to download even more books using the Wi-Fi connection.
