Minecraft for Xbox One, PS4 release date

Minecraft is one of the most popular games around. It's already available on PC, Mac, Android, iOS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and more, but when is Minecraft coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PS Vita? We explore the Minecraft release date news and rumours here. See also: PS4 vs Xbox One review

The good news is that owners of the new generation consoles can expect Minecraft to become available for them this year. On 22 May, Minecraft developer Mojang published an update on its website, providing lots of new details about the Xbox One Edition, PlayStation Vita Edition and PlayStation 4 Edition of Minecraft.

"We're finally able to share news about Minecraft on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita," the site reads. "Apologies for the delay, but putting Minecraft on new consoles is a serious business."

The Minecraft world on Xbox One won't be "infinite" due to save size limits, but it will be 36 times the area of the Xbox 360 and PS3 world, says Mojang.

Minecraft for Xbox One release date

Mojang has announced that Minecraft: Xbox One Edition will be released on Xbox Live Marketplace in August.

Mojang says that it'll cost $19.99 to download (no UK price yet but that's about £12), or, for those who purchased the Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition from Xbox Live Marketplace or played online with the disc version will be able to upgrade to the Xbox One Edition for $4.99 (£3).

Plus, what's cool is that players with Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition will be able to import their worlds into Xbox One, though it won't work the other way around (Xbox One to Xbox 360).

Minecraft release date: PS Vita Edition

Minecraft is already available on PS3, but Mojang says it'll be updated to Playstation 3 + Vita Edition in August, when it'll be available to download from PSN.

Anyone who's already got the PS3 version of Minecraft will get the Vita version for free, and will be able to transfer saves between the two consoles to get access to Minecraft wherever you are. Unfortunately, though, Mojang hasn't yet found a way to enable a cheaper upgrade from the Blu-ray disc version of Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition to Minecraft: PlayStation 3 and Vita.

For those new to Minecraft, it'll cost $19.99 (around £12) to download Minecraft: PlayStation 3 and Vita Edition.

Minecraft for PS4 release date

The PS4 version of Minecraft is also coming in August. Like the PS3 + Vita and Xbox One versions, it'll cost $19.99 (£12). If you've got the PlayStation 3 Edition of Minecraft already, which you downloaded from PSN, you can get the PS4 version for a special upgrade price of $4.99.

Transferring worlds from the PS3 version of Minecraft to the PS4 version will be possible, though transferring from PS4 to PS3 won't.
