Best games coming out in 2016: Mafia 3

Release date: 7 October 2016

Mafia 3 is coming out this year, and there's no doubt it's highly anticipated. Set in 1968 in New Orleans, the game sees players take on the role of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran whose familiy have always been involved with organised crime.

Best games coming out in 2016: Gears of War 4

Release date: 11 October 2016

It hasn't even been released yet, but Gears of War 4 is already being dubbed game of the year for many gamers. The popular Xbox-exclusive franchise is set 25 years in the future, and gamers will play as new protagonist JD Fenix, son of Marcus Fenix who players of the series will already be familiar with.

Best games coming out in 2016: Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration

Release date: 11 October 2016
Available to pre-order now from Amazon.
Platforms: PS4 (already available on Xbox One and PC).

PS4 users will finally be able to play Rise of the Tomb Raider in October. Square Enix has announced that, in addition to new content later this year for Xbox One and PC Players, Rise of the Tomb Raider is coming to PS4 as a 20 Year Celebration Edition.

Release date: 21 October 2016

It's been almost six years since the launch of Civilization V, so it was only a matter of time before Firaxis Games announced the sixth in the series. It's a turn-based strategy game that has sold over 33 million copies worldwide to date, so we expect the next instalment to be a big success.

Best games coming out in 2016: Battlefield 1

Release date: 21 October 2016

There's a new Battlefield from EA Dice and it's not Battlefield 5 like everyone thought. Instead it's Battlefield 1, set in World War 1, which has already won millions of fans after Call of Duty's 2016's space sci-fi game disappointed gamers across the globe.

Best games coming out in 2016: Titanfall 2

Release date: 28 October 2016

With Titanfall clocking up an impressive 10 million players, it's no surprise that the upcoming sequel is highly anticipated. The good news is that, unlike its Xbox exclusive predecessor, Titanfall 2 will be multi-platform allowing even more players to join in the fun. We don't know much about it yet but we do know that it's set to be revealed properly on 12 June during E3 2016.

Best games coming out in 2016: Call of Duty Infinite Warfare

Release date: 4 November 2016

Rumours about the next Call of Duty were quickly followed by an official announcement from Activision that revealed Call of Duty Infinite Warfare would be 2016's title, and that it would be set in the future with a space/sci-fi theme.

To say fans are disappointed would be an understatement - its launch trailer has become one of the most disliked videos on YouTube.

It will come with a remastered version of Call of Duty Modern Warfare, though, which seems to be its one redeeming quality right now. Whoops.

Release date: 11 November

Bethesda used its first ever E3 2015 press conference to reveal that Dishonored 2 is set for a 2016 release. There's little information about the game at the moment, but you can find out everything there is to know so far in our Dishonored 2 article.

Watch Dogs 2 was showcased at Ubisoft's E3 2016 conference, complete with a release date for the upcoming game. With a new protagonist, new settings and, most importantly, new gadgets, Watch Dogs 2 looks to offer a much more exciting experience than its predecessor.

Release date: 23 November 2016

We can't help but get excited about a new Pokémon game, and Pokémon Sun and Moon look particularly good. It's coming to 3DS this November, and with it comes the seventh generation of Pokémon including two new Legendaries and three new starter Pokémon.

There's also a new Battle Royal mode that lets four trainers battle each other at once.

Best games coming out in 2016: Final Fantasy XV

Release date: 29 November 2016

The ever popular Final Fantasy franchise is set to be added to with a new game for the new generation consoles later this year, available to pre-order now. It's an open-world adventure that is the first of the numbered series to feature action-orientated combat in real time, and it looks amazing.

Best games coming out in 2016: Star Citizen

Release date: TBC 2016

Star Citizen managed to raise almost $100m from Kickstarter and through other crowdfunding means, which just goes to show how highly anticipated it is. It brings together solo, cooperative, FPS, third-person, open-world gameplay, space exploration and hand-to-hand combat into one shiny package that we can't wait to open.

The release date is questionable - we're told 2016 but we're rapidly running out of months left in the year and with no solid release date yet revealed it could well mean we've still got a while to wait.

Best games coming out in 2016: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Release date: TBC 2016

Ok, you might have have a wait a while for this but it will be worth the wait, we hope. Although Nintendo has confirmed Zelda for Wii U and has now officially named it The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, we still haven't got a solid release date aside from a very vague 2016 (it was 2015). find out more in our Zelda for Wii U release date, UK price, gameplay features article. We had to wait a long time for Mario Kart 8 and it was worthwhile, so we're sure the same will be true here.

Zelda for Wii U will be set in a completely open world and Nintendo's short teaser and new E3 2016 is enough to get us excited about the game.

Best games coming out in 2016: F1 2016

Release date: TBC 2016
Available to pre-order now from GameStop.
Platforms: Xbox One and PS4

Codemasters has announced F1 2016, the official game for the 2016 Formula One World Championship, but we don’t yet know exactly when it'll be coming out.

It'll include a 10-season career mode and a new street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan. The graphics look stunning, too.

Matterfall is an upcoming game for PS4 that has grabbed our interest. It follows an unexpected hero fighting for survival on a ravished sci-fi world infected by an alien material known as Smart Matter.

Release date: 14 February 2017

Medieval warfare game For Honor sees players take on the role of a Viking, Samurai or Knight, with each faction offering its own unique abilities. Release date: 21 February 2017

We're really excited about Horizon Zero Dawn, an upcoming PlayStation exclusive from Guerrila Games. It's set 1,000 years into the future, when robotic creatures have taken over the planet. You'll play as bow-yielding heroine Aloy as she hunts the creatures and uses their machine parts to her advantage.

Best games coming out in 2017: South Park The Fractured But Whole

Release date: 31 March 2017

The multi-part follow up to 2014's South Park: The Stick of Truth turns away from the fantasy theme and has the kids playing superheroes. It's set to arrive later this year, and you'll play as 'The New Kid,' who is trying to become part of the kids' superhero gang.

Best games coming out in 2017: Tekken 7

Release date: Early 2017
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Set to be the last in the series, 20 years after the original Tekken was ported to the PlayStation, Tekken 7 is said to include the conclusion to the Mishima clan saga.

Release date: TBC 2017

Considering the original Prey announcement was made five years ago, fans of the series have been waiting a while. However, this is not the Prey that was announced all those years ago. Instead, it has been reimagined by an entirely new studio and will now offer a near-future Sci-fi FPS.

Unveiled at Gamescom 2015 in August, Crackdown 3 is set to be one of the most exciting games on the horizon, showcasing some truly amazing technical advancements that make it stand out from the crowd. Intrigued? You should be.

Unfortunately E3 2016 revealed that Crackdown 3 has been delayed until 2017, so we'll have to wait a while longer before we can play it for ourselves.

Announced during Sony's Paris Games Week in October, Detroit: Become Human is an exciting upcoming sci-fi game created by Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls developer Quantic Dream.

Days Gone is one of the brand-new titles announced by Sony during E3 2016. The open-world survival adventure game looks utterly terrifying, with zombie-like creatures out to eat your brains. Worse yet, they're speedy and there are thousands of them.

We don't know quite when Days Gone is coming out yet, but presumably it'll be some time in 2017.

Saints Row developer Violition Studios has announced that it is working on a new game called Agents of Mayhem. The game's three 'heroes' use their unique skills to take on the bad guys in an open-world landscape filled with plenty of action.

Best games coming out in 2017: Death Stranding

You might notice something familiar about the star of this new game from Hideo Kojima. That's right, The Walking Dead's own Norman Reedus has been recreated in digital form for Death Stranding, which so far has left us scratching our heads.

It was announced with a cryptic trailer that really doesn't tell us much, but the creators have said that it will be an action game "if you really want to put a genre on it."

Best games coming out in 2017: Kingdom Hearts 3

It's been more than 11 years since Kingdom Hearts II arrived on PS2 in 2005. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next instalment, and there was a time when we were unsure whether there would be one at all.

The good news is, there definitely is going to be a Kingdom Hearts 3. The bad news is we still don't know when it's coming out.

The new Dawn of War III trailer has got a lot of hearts racing through its quite remarkably epic cinematic. Set to arrive in 2017, DOW 3 is expected to encorporate both a single-player campaign and a multiplayer aspect, presenting both online and offline challenges for players.

Yes, you read that correctly. Crash Bandicoot is getting a reboot and we cannot wait. Announced at E3 2016 during Sony's press conference, Activision is re-launching Crash Bandicoot, Crash 2 and Warped in HD for PS4. There's no word about when they're actually coming out, but Crash Bandicoot is coming to our consoles sooner thanks to Skylanders Imaginators.

Ever Oasis is the latest RPG game from Nintendo, coming to the 3DS next year. Players are put in the shoes of a young boy called Tethu, whose main aim is to create a village in the middle of a desert to act as a base for his quest to find his older brother.
