Remember the days when computer game characters had square hands? Those are long gone, but graphics continue to improve, with some of the latest and upcoming games so realistic it's difficult to tell that it's not footage of real people. Here, we round up the 14 games with the best graphics that are out now or coming this year for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Games with the best graphics: Out now
1. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Released in November 2014 for Windows, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360, the latest installation in the Call of Duty franchise used an all-new engine that was built from scratch for new and improved rendering, animation, physics and audio systems, resulting in some seriously good graphics (shown top).
2. Far Cry 4
Also released in November last year, Far Cry 4 is a stunning game with vast landscapes that look amazing, particularly on the new generation of consoles. It's been nominated for BAFTA 2015 Game awards for Artistic Achievement and Game Design, too.
3. The Last of Us: Remastered
July of 2014 saw the launch of The Last of Us: Remastered for PS4, and it's horrifyingly beautiful. The zombie survival game's Remastered version has enhanced graphics and rendering, but keeps the same story and gameplay elements as the award-winning version released for PS3 in 2013.
Also nominated for the BAFTA 2015 Game award for Game Design, massively-multi-player first-person shooter Destiny is set in a sci-fi world that looks amazing on PS4 and Xbox One.
5. Infamous: Second Son
Another PS4 exclusive now, this time in the form of open world action adventure game Infamous: Second Son. This one came out in March 2014, and was praised for its visuals including Delsin's fluid (and really awesome) superpowers.
6. Grand Theft Auto V
This list wouldn't be complete without the brilliant Grand Theft Auto V, which came to PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, followed by an 18 November PS4 and Xbox One version with enhanced graphics that are pretty incredible. It's set to be released for Microsoft Windows on 24 March.
7. Tomb Raider
The reboot of the much-loved Tomb Raider series in 2013 brought Lara Croft to life once more, and she's more realistic than ever thanks to the award-winning game design. Tomb Raider will be back later this year with the second game in the new series, but this time it'll be an Xbox exclusive. Find out more.
8. Alien: Isolation
Alien: Isolation has been nominated for a BAFTA 2015 award for Game Design, and rightly so. (In fact, it's been nominated for a total of six nominations, which is more than any of the other nominees this year).
Games with the best graphics: Coming soon
If the games we've already mentioned aren't enough for you, you'll be pleased to hear that even better graphics are coming from new titles expected this year, and these are just the tip of the iceberg. You can find out which games you should be most excited about for 2015 here.
9. Final Fantasy XV
Final Fantasy has always been famous for its brilliant graphics, but the fifteenth instalment is set to be the best yet, with detailed environments based on real-world locations around the world and incredible character detail.
10. Quantum Break
An Xbox One exclusive now, this one a third-person shooter called Quantum Break that's set to arrive this year. It centres around a failed time travel experiment that gives the main characters in the game the ability to manipulate time.
11. The Order: 1886
This one is very nearly here. Set to be released on 20 February, The Order: 1886's graphics look amazing.
12. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming in May to PS4, Xbox One and Windows, and has been named one of the most highly-anticipated games of the year. It uses a new REDengine 3 game engine that should allow for the complex storyline with multiple threads without sacrificing the world of the huge open world environment.
13. Tom Clancy's The Division
Coming to PS4, Xbox One and Windows later this year, Tom Clancy's The Division is another open world third-person shooter and it uses the Snowdrop game engine that has been developed for the newest generation of consoles.
14. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Uncharted 4 is another game that we cannot wait for, and it looks like it's going to be incredible both in terms of graphics and storyline. Frank Tzengi, the lead character artist working on the game, says that the character models are almost as good as the realism seen in CGI used in movies.
