ISP Yahoo today launched the first worldwide anti-spam campaign — dubbed 'Dump the Junk Day' — in a bid to raise awareness of the menace of junk email.
Over the past few months, spam prevention has been at the forefront of industry and government strategy, with analysts estimatating around 30 percent of all email traffic is unsolicited.
Yahoo's European survey found that us Brits gets angrier about receiving spam than any other form of unwanted communication, such as junk post and house calls from door-to-door salesmen. Perhaps that's because most spam messages are such obvious scams: a tiny proportion (just two percent) admitted to having been duped into spending money on false offers and services advertised through junk messages.
The Department of Trade and Industry today spoke out in support of the campaign.
"Technology has an important role to play and it is essential that we educate users on how to stop their inbox clogging up with unwanted emails. I applaud initiatives such as Yahoo's Dump the Junk Day that aim to do just that," said Steven Timms ecommerce minister.
The company will also be advertising the campaign through branded dustcarts, bins and binbags.
