Lufthansa will become the first airline to offer a commercial broadband service across its longhaul fleet. By signing a deal with Boeing to become the launch customer for its Connexion mobile information service, Lufthansa retains its lead as the airline providing the most cutting-edge technology to its passengers.
The airline has already carried out a successful trial of the service on its Frankfurt to Washington route. Following today's agreement it will roll out mobile broadband across its entire fleet of 80 longhaul aircraft, starting in early 2004.
In advance of the commercial launch of the broadband service, Boeing and Lufthansa are working on a range of payment options which would allow passengers full access to the web in flight. These include the use of air miles or bonuses as well as a service access fee.
