Research conducted by uSwitch has shown that not a single town or city in the UK achieves an average 'super-fast' broadband speed.

For a town to be 'super-fast' it needs to have an average broadband speed of 24Mbps, according to the government. However, the closest to this target is Telford with a speed of 23Mbps, says price comparison service, uSwitch.com. See also: TalkTalk offers unlimited broadband for £2.50.

"The speed test data – collected from broadband users in the 50 biggest UK cities and towns – shows that Belfast is the only capital city with average speeds above 20Mbps. Even London, the financial capital of the world, is trailing behind what the Government classes as super-fast, with average download speeds of 17Mbps." said uSwitch.

Although the average download speed for the UK has risen to 14.5Mbps, more than a quarter (27 percent) of homes have sluggish speeds of less than 3Mbps on average. The wooden spoon award for slowest city goes to Hull with a speed of 10.5Mbps.

Norwich gets a special mention in the report for boosting speeds by 75 percent in the space of one year, but only to 11.6Mbps making it still one of the slowest cities in the UK. More than a third 35 percent of its residents are yet to see their average speeds break 3Mbps in the last 12 months. The same is true for broadband users in Huddersfield and York.

In London a shocking one in five broadband users get speeds lower than 3Mbps. uSwitch says at that rate, it would take almost six hours to download a BluRay film.

Here's the top 20 cities for average broadband speed according to uSwitch so you can see if you're hometown makes the grade.
