Virgin Media has expressed that customers needn’t worry about the traffic management throttling which came into effect this week.
It came to light that the broadband provider will throttle its customers' download speed by up to half if a usage limit, starting at 3.5GB, is reached. Its original statement stressed that the updated policy is designed to reduce the impact of heavy users.
Virgin Media told us that it would affect less than five percent of its customers due to the specific nature of the traffic management system.
A spokesman for Virgin Media told PC Advisor: "The reality is the customers don't need to worry about usage - there is no 'penalty' beyond a temporary slowdown if they use over a certain amount."
After our report yesterday, many PC Advisor readers asked if there is a way to check and monitor their usage to avoid the speed throttle and the answer from the firm is yes. However, the feature is not available yet.
The spokesman said: "We're developing a 'dashboard' of sorts that will provide lots of information on things like usage to make it easier for customers to manage their accounts, switch speeds etc."
The feature will come as part of an update to the My Virgin Media customer area website later this year. It will "provide a range of tools which would include things like a speed tester and bandwidth usage reports so customers can better understand their usage as a whole."
