Toasts&Tiles for Gmail 1.0.0.4

If you’re running Windows 8 or Windows RT and make use of Gmail, there’s no need to head to your browser to check your email. Toasts&Tiles for Gmail is a standalone email client for Gmail that is capable of handling up to three different accounts (including Google App accounts). In some respect, this app is little more than a wrapper for a browser, but it does have a few extras to offer.

First of all, as the name would suggest, there is support for toast notifications. Give the app permission to run in the background and you will be alerted whenever new messages are received. Live tiles are also supported so you can get a quick overview of the state of your inbox from the Start screen.

As this is a modern app is can be used in full screen mode, or snapped to the edge of the desktop in a small, always-visible bar. This provides another handy way to keep on top of your inbox and you can take advantage of all of the usual features of Gmail.

In terms of extra options, there are not very many to explore. The font size of emails can be adjusted as required, and there is the ability to pin individual messages to the Start screen for easy access. But besides this what you have is a beautifully simple email client designed with Gmail users in mind.

It could be argued that the restriction of only working with Gmail is too limiting, but as it is possible to configure your Gmail account to pull in emails from other providers, this is something that can be easily worked around.
