Tomahawk 0.8.1

Music is something that is best shared but there are few music players that take full advantage of social networking. This is something that Tomahawk aims to address, making it possible to listen to not only your own music collection that you have stored on your hard drive, but also browse the internet for new music and even keep an eye on what you friends and contacts are listening to.

Where Tomahawk stands out from the competition is in the way it allows you to deal with music fdrom multiple sources. You can listen to YouTube or Spotify based music alongside music stored in your existing iTunes library – along with countless other sources – in exactly the same way; just mix and match to suit your mood. Whatever you are listening to, you can share this information with your friends and this can include contacts you pull in through Twitter and Google Talk amongst others.

Just as you can share your music with others, so you can see what your friends are listening to, you can also browse through the libraries of other people and listen to the same tracks together. Should you have a few guilty pleasures in your music collection, there is a private mode which enables you to listen to music you would rather other people did not know about without having to share it with the world – just select the Listen Privately option and you can indulge yourself.

You can also listen to online radio stations, create your own broadcasts and much more. Tomahawk is already a very impressive piece of software, but with increasing interest in the APIs, the possibilities look set to grow even further.
