ESET Smart Security 6 is a preview build of ESET's lightweight yet full-featured internet security suite.
The package comes with everything you'd expect from this kind of tool. There's a strong antivirus engine with effective real-time protection; a smart firewall detects and blocks remote attacks; web access and antiphishing modules keep you safe online; and you get an intrusion protection system, spam filter, removable media protection and more.
New this time is the "Anti-Theft" feature, which aims to help you recover a stolen laptop. If the worst happens then log on to your ESET account and you may be able to see the device's position on a map, use the webcam (if you have one) to watch the thieves, view grabs of the laptop's screen, and more. It's all fairly standard, but still a welcome addition to the package.
Elsewhere, the program can now scan your system whenever it's idle. Virus database updates can be rolled back if you think they're unstable or corrupt, allowing you to revert to the previous version. The interface has been revamped to make the program easier to use, and Smart Security's firewall, heuristics and cloud-based file reputation system have all seen improvements.
This is a beta, of course, and so needs to be treated with care. As we write ESET say the program is known to crash when restoring objects from quarantine, for instance, potentially a fatal flaw if it's misidentified some system-critical file. Only install this on systems which have a full and complete backup available.
If you are interested, though, protect at least one device with ESET Anti-Theft and you'll automatically be entered in a prize draw to win a full licence of Smart Security 6 for one year. The contest runs between May 17 and June 17, 2012, and there will be 100 winners every week, so your chances of winning aren't bad at all.
