Bombono DVD is a powerful DVD authoring tool for Windows and Linux.
The program supports transcoding of all the main video formats: AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV, MPEG4. Just drag and drop them onto the work area and the program should be able to import them.
It's easy to view a video, and adding chapter points at the appropriate points just takes a couple of clicks.
Bombono DVD also provides a WYSIWYG menu editor with live thumbnails. This is a little more hassle than if the program followed the usual route of providing menu templates, as you can't just choose a design you like and see how your DVD will look immediately. But it's not too difficult to set up, and you'll soon get the feel for how things work.
And the overall authoring support is very good. You can import video from DVDs, and author your project to a DVD folder, an ISO image, or burn it directly to a DVD disc.
There are problems, too, which is no great surprise (we've yet to encounter a free DVD video authoring tool which worked exactly as you'd expect). When we tried to burn a project to a DVD+R disc, for instance, an error message told us that it had detected a DVD+R, and out project could only be written to a DVD+R, DVD-R or DVD-DL disc. Switching to a DVD-R worked, but shouldn't have been necessary.
Still, overall it's a useful program, especially if you're not bothered about menus at all. You can drag and drop your clips onto Bombono, click the Output tab, select Burn to DVD and click the Build DVD-Video button, and that's it - the program will author your DVD right away.
