Norton Anti-Theft Beta

Norton Anti-Theft is a web service which may be able to help you recover devices if they're lost or stolen. The product will only work with laptops and PCs in the US for the duration of the beta, but after that will also allow you to track phones, tablets and more, wherever you are in the world.

Anti-Theft is easy to set up. Just create a Norton Beta account, download and install the client, and that's it - the program runs in the background (consuming only around 11MB RAM) and you can forget it's even there.

If your system is lost or stolen, though, you can now log back in to the Anti-Theft site and, hopefully view its current location on a map (though the system must be connected to the internet for this to work).

You're also able to lock the device, so no-one can access your data.

If you have a webcam, then the Sneak Peek option will take a shot of its current view, so you can see what's going on.

And there's an option to display a custom message on the device, so for instance you could offer a reward to anyone who returns it.

This is all reasonably familiar, and there are plenty of similar schemes for mobile computing devices. Norton Anti-Theft does provide plenty of features, though, and of course as a beta it's also free of charge, so if you're looking for an easy way to protect several devices then it could be worth a try.

Note that download here will point you to the Norton Anti-Theft account page where you will need to register or login and then download the file to every device you want to track.

It's important to point out that Norton Anti-Theft beta will work outside of the US but, at this stage, is only fully functional within the US.
