AVG LiveKive 2012.10802

The online backup market is becoming increasingly crowded – these days, the bare minimum you should expect from your online backup provider is the ability to back up files (plus keep backups of multiple versions of the same file, just in case), sync files between all your computers and devices, plus share backed up files and folders with others should you so wish.

Undeterred, AVG – best known for its free anti-virus tool – has launched a brand new service. AVG LiveKive offers three backup packages, including two paid subscriptions: 25GB ($49.99 per year) and - at launch - an unlimited package for $79.99 per year. The free account offers a generous 5GB storage.

AVG LiveKive is basically a rebadged version of the same client software used by the SpiderOak backup service, which means it’s simple to use and very easy on the eye. The beta version was Windows-only, but the final release - like SpiderOak - comes in both Windows and Mac flavours, while there's also an iPhone/iPad app for accessing your files through your iOS device.

After installation you’ll be asked to either log in or sign up for a new AVG account. Once done, work your way through the tabs. The Backup tab offers basic and advanced views – switch to Advanced to choose exactly which folders and files get backed up if backup space is a premium. Once folders have been backed up they can subsequently be synced with other computers - install LiveKive on each - or shared over the internet.
