SME Server 7.5.1

SME Server is an Open Source distribution for small and medium enterprises. It is a simple, powerful, secure Linux server for networking and communicating, used by thousands of individuals, companies and organisations all over the world. SME Server (formerly known as E-Smith) is built on CentOS, the white box release of Red Hat's open source code, which gives it a very stable base. On top of this is all the software to act as an Internet gateway, router, firewall, server or any combination of these.

A full range of services is supported, web serving via Apache with PHP, Python and MySQL support for running most dynamic sites and CMS systems. Mail is equally well catered for with SMTP, POP3 and IMAP servers, along with spam filtering and virus scanning. Other network services include file sharing, using all popular protocols, print sharing and directory services. The support for Windows and Unix protocols makes this a good choice as the hub for a mixed network of Windows, Linux and even Mac computers.

This is a complete distribution, not a set of programs you install on an existing operating system. Installing SME server wipes the hard disk and takes over the computer, it is intended to be used on a dedicated box, although this can be quite an old and low powered box for a smallish office. The server runs headless, a monitor and keyboard is needed for installation, after that everything is done through its dedicated web interface, so any with the authority to do so can configure this from anywhere on the network. The web interface provides information and analysis of system activity, as well as administrative functions.
