Need for Speed is a well-known franchise, and EA have taken a big risk in bringing the fast paced racing game to the iPhone small screen. While it could have all gone horribly wrong, the game has been executed with aplomb and the high octane game has made a successful transition to the iPhone.
The available tracks are linear, and while this is a major difference from the free roaming worlds available in console version of the game, it does not detract from its playability. Controls for the game are about as good as they come. Rather than littering the screen with icons that need to be touched, auto-acceleration means that you don’t need to worry about propelling your car forwards and accelerometer friendly steering wheel controls take care of cornering.
A variety of gestures are used to apply brakes and use nitros meaning that you are left free to concentrate on the road ahead. The graphics are genuinely impressive, particularly when you consider the hardware the game is running on. Speed is certainly present, and the environment just flies by at breakneck speed.
With eight different race mode, three different environments and a range of vehicle customisation options, there’s plenty to keep you coming back for more.
