Argente Utilities is a free portable suite of tools for cleaning up, optimising, repairing, and generally improving your PC's performance and stability.

The program has a largely familiar feature set, with modules to clean your disk and Registry, control Windows startup programs, wipe system and application histories, uninstall unwanted applications, optimise your Windows services, remove spyware, and more. A "One Click" option looks for and resolves multiple problems, while the Backup Manager keeps backups of your Registry in case you need to restore deleted settings later.

There's nothing too special here. The "Spyware Cleaner" delivered some odd results, including warning us of a perfectly ordinary PNG file on our desktop. Most of the modules are relatively basic (Uninstall Manager is just a shell for your regular application uninstaller, Process Manager has about 1% of the functionality of Task Manager). Others seem horribly slow.

Still, there are some more capable features. The Registry Cleaner worked reasonably well for us. The Disk Cleaner did a good job of scanning our system for junk files by extension, and made at least some effort to protect us from harm (by default it ignores read only files and anything in your system folders).

But the real surprise here is Argente Tools, a collection of smaller utilities for performing general maintenance tasks. There's simple file and text encryption, batch renaming, secure deletion, image conversion, a password generator, file split and join tools, even an FTP client. Some of these are also basic (the file encrypter and image converter only work with one file at a time), but others are capable enough, and overall they make a useful addition to your portable PC toolkit.

- New: compatible with Windows 10
- Improved: internal code
- Fixed: some internal mistakes

Most of Argente Utilities core features are relatively ordinary, but the sheer weight of unexpected extras (you even get an FTP client) mean it may still be worth a look, especially if you need a collection of tools to run anywhere.
