G Data Internet Security 2012 is capable security suite which isn't packed with extras, but delivers good protection where it really matters.

And so you don't get all of the goodies provided in some of the premium suites. There's no backup tool here, for instance. No password manager.

What you do get, though, is G Data's dual-engine antivirus technology, which regularly comes top of the list for malware detection rates in independent testing.

There's a very capable firewall, which won't hassle you with alerts, yet is also highly configurable if you need to customise your protection.

Built-in browsing protection prevents you from accessing many dangerous sites. A spam filter does a reasonable job of protecting your Inbox from junk, while parental controls help limit your family's access to the worst of the web.

New this time is what G Data calls its CloseGap technology, which the company says "provides fast, effective protection against computer malware, based on a balanced combination of reactive and proactive malware detection techniques".

Another addition is the AutostartManager, which helps optimise your startup programs to cut system boot time.

G Data's BankGuard technology has been improved, and now does an even better job of protecting your online banking and shopping transactions.

And all this is presented via a totally redesigned interface, making the program much easier to use.

Verdict

While there are more powerful suites about, G Data Internet Security 2014 excels where it matters, and does a good job of detecting and removing both local and web-based threats
