Avira AntiVirus Premium 2012 is the latest edition of Avira's commercial antivirus engine.

Just like the free product, it offers basic real-time protection, on demand and scheduled scanning. The 2012 version brings easier installation, and a faster loading, more straightforward interface. There are some useful security tweaks - you get built-in HOSTS file protection, for instance - and it's been optimised to use less RAM.

Avira AntiVirus Premium 2012 includes many additional features, though. Behaviour monitoring allows the program to detect even brand new and previously undiscovered threats, for example. An antiphishing module keeps you safe online. The program looks out for and blocks infected emails; the AntiDrive-by module protects you from unwanted downloads; and its Game Mode suspends notifications during games, movies and other full-screen applications.

And of course Avira Internet Security 2012 takes all these features and extends them with everything you'd expect from a security suite: a spam filter, a powerful firewall (now updated with support for IPv6), parental controls, a backup tool, disaster recovery and more.

Verdict

Avira AntiVirus Premium 2012 isn't radically different to what's gone before, but that's okay: it's a little faster, a little easier to use, and provides a little more security, and if you're an Avira fan then you'll probably find it worth the upgrade
