Ubuntu 11.04 is the latest release from Ubuntu and continues the tradition of providing a modern, easy to use and flexible operating system for all needs. Ubuntu is suited to the home, the office, the school and on the move with its netbook release. This release has several significant changes from the previous version.

Ubuntu 11.04 codenamed Natty Narwhal, looks very different to previous Ubuntus. The orangey brown "Human" themes are gone, to be replaced with the Light themes, with two new variants. This is a brighter and more colourful appearance. But it's not just the colour scheme that has changed, Ubuntu have made a major change to the user interface, changing the positions of the window control buttons, close is now in the top left. This has met with some resistance but actually has a more logical feel once you get over the initial shock - and it's a nice blast from the past for those brought up on Amigas. There have been other user interface tweaks, generally in the right direction.

Ubuntu have also introduced UbuntuOne, a cloud service that automatically synchronises documents, bookmarks and contacts between your computers, wherever they are, by syncing each one with your online account. This is also linked to their music store, so any music you buy is automatically downloaded to each of your computers.

Ubuntu has long been a popular Linux distro, and a good way for new users to get to grips with Linux, Lucid Lynx continue that tradition, with several significant improvements.

Verdict

One of the best Linux systems for new users. Easy to install and set up with a good choice of software and a shiny new interface.
