Network administration is something of a full time job, and it is important that you are able to closely monitor that everything is running as it should. This is easy enough when you are in the office or sat at a computer with an internet connection as it means that you are able to make use of network monitoring tools such as PRTG Network Monitor. iPRTG is an iOS app that enables you to access the same information on your iPhone or iPad.

While PRTG Network Monitor can be used to not only monitor by also administer a network, i PRTG only offers monitoring options, but it does so in a way that has been perfectly designed for the screens of iOS devices. This is not really a tool for anyone interested in monitoring their home network – as the requirement for PRTG Network Monitor demonstrates – but it is a valuable asset for network administrators.

The app enables you to monitor up and down time and well as viewing information about network traffic and network usage. You can configure sensors that make it easy to view details about nodes that have the highest or lowest bandwidths, fastest pings and much more. Although it is not possible to receive notifications of alarm events, it is possible to quickly home in on those sensors which are currently in an alarm state so you can easily check what is going on.

The app is a little on the pricey side, but it is still a small price to pay be able to monitor your network from almost anywhere.

An unfortunate side-effect of the way in which the app works means that it is not possible to reap the benefits of push notifications. According to the developer, due to Apple's design of the Push Notification system and due to the fact that each PRTG users runs his own instance of PRTG, it is a very complex task to build push notifications into iPRTG.

Instead you must manually check things, but push notifications can be addressed with third-party software such as Prowl.

A fairly powerful monitoring tool, but one that comes at a price and has a few limitations.
