Being away from your computer need not mean that you are unable to use it. With a remote access app install you can use one computer to access another and use it as if you were sitting in front of it. When you are out and about, it is possible that you may only have your phone or tablet with your, but the existence of GoToMyPC means that you will still be able to connect to your PC or Mac, use its file and more.
If you’re working on a small screen phone things are going to be a little cramped, but what this app enables you to do is to view and control the desktop of your computer wherever you may be. The fact that the service can be used over 3G as well as wifi means that the opportunities for remote access are even greater – you could be virtually in the middle of nowhere and still be able to access your important files. 128-bit AES encryption coupled with a system of password helps to ensure that anything you transfer between devices remains secure and private.
Getting up and running is incredibly simple, with no complex firewall configuration necessary. Once connected you can zoom in and out as well as panning and scrolling, but the best experience is to be had on a tablet. The extra screen space means that you are able to spend more time getting on with what you need to do rather than navigating your way around the desktop. The keyboard and mouse controls are well implemented, and while you would not want to use your computer in this way for extended periods of time, it’s great for emergencies.
While this app is available free of charge, in order to be able to use it you will need to have a GoToMyPC subscription. There is a 30 day trial available that will enable you to test things out so you can see if it works for you, but with numerous free alternatives available, anyone who is not looking for round the clock support this may be difficult to justify. For corporate environments, the security and stability that is on offer is going to be appealing however.
If you’re an existing GoToMyPC user, this is a great tool to add to your phone or tablet, but it’s not a reason to switch from free remote access apps.
