Video editing software is more readily associated with high-end desktop computers than mobile devices, but the iPhone app iMovies packs a surprising punch. Compatible with iPhone 4, the app can be used to make basic edits such as trimming to the HD video footage you have recorded.

Movies can also be incorporated into projects, with the option of adding photos and music as well as eye catching titles and transitions. With a selection of themes to choose from, whatever look you are trying to achieve with your video, iMovie provides the tools you need.

Background music can be automatically added as part of a theme, or you can include tracks from your iTunes library. Music can be automatically quietened to highlight portions of the original video soundtrack.

Completed movies can be saved in a number of different quality settings and they can then be shared with others via MMS or my uploading to the likes of YouTube and MobileMe. Movies can be created and customised in an instant, and automatic geo-tagging makes this a great way to create video memories that will last forever.

Verdict

Despite the limitations of the iPhone's hardware and screen size, iMovie is wonderfully effective as a simple video editing tool
