Those wishing to upgrade from an older version of Windows can also do so for £49.99, if you wish to buy a boxed edition with optical media. This edition covers Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Vista and Windows 7. (Note that only Windows 7 users can upgrade without having to reinstall software applications. The good news is that if you don't need a box or a DVD, but you do want to upgrade to Windows 8, you can head over to windows.co.uk and purchase an upgrade via download for just £24.99 - until the end of January, at least. Once you have installed Windows 8 Pro, you can go to the Microsoft site and download and install Windows Media Center. This is no longer included in the OS by default.

Microsoft Windows 8 N edition

As usual there is an 'N' edition of Windows 8 because Microsoft is forced to do so by the European Commission. It is the same as other editions except it doesn’t come with Windows Media Player. According to Amazon, the upgrade price to Windows 8 N is £129.99 for standard and £189.99 for Pro. They are priced so highly because Microsoft would prefer you to purchase the normal versions.
