Best Xbox One games: Rise of the Tomb Raider

Get Rise of the Tomb Raider now from Amazon.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is the second in the rebooted Tomb Raider series, and is currently an Xbox exclusive with other platforms missing out on the action until the end of 2016. Set in Kitezh one year after the events of the first Tomb Raider game, Rise of the Tomb Raider is a third-person action game with familiar gameplay mechanics – which is by no means a bad thing.

The game features a full day-and-night cycle with a weather system that has a direct effect on what Lara will run into. The combat system offers options for stealth and sneak attacks, and Lara can now swim.

Best Xbox One games: Gears of War: Ultimate Edition

Get Gears of War now from Amazon.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a remake of the hugely popular original Gears of War game, featuring five chapters of the campaign that were, up until now, exclusive to the original PC game. Gamers that buy Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will also gain access to the closed beta for the upcoming ‘Gears of War 4’ in Spring 2016, which is always a nice bonus.

For those that don’t know, Gears of War is a third person shooter that focuses on COG army soldiers Marcus and Dominic trying to wipe out the Locust forces that have taken over their planet, Sera. The campaign can be done alone or co-operatively, and there are also several AI characters that’ll join you to lend a helping hand when needed.

The online multiplayer places a heavy focus on using cover to avoid taking damage – you’ll find out fast that if you don’t, you’ll be killed very often. The game features a variety of loadouts or ‘archetypes’, including an assault rifle with a mounted chainsaw, along with snipers and shotguns to deal serious damage to your enemies.

Best Xbox One games: Forza 6

Get Forza now on Amazon.

Forza 6 is the sixth installation of the hugely popular Xbox-exclusive Forza series, with the latest game offering huge improvements over the popular Forza 5. Forza 6 brings with it dynamic weather conditions which will effect how cars handle in certain situations, causing skidding or even hydroplaning if the car encounters a puddle too fast in the rain. The game also features over 450 cars (more than twice the amount found in Forza 5!) as well as nine brand new tracks to race on.

Arguably, the biggest addition to Forza 6 is the story mode, appropriately named “Stories of Motorsport”, which offers around 70 hours of gameplay according to the developers. The game mode features commentary from various automotive and racing personalities, which should help to flesh out the various events you’ll be competing in. The game is beautifully designed and graphically, looks stunning, and is a must for any driving fan.

Best Xbox One games: Halo 5: Guardians

Get Halo 5 now on Amazon.

Halo 5: Guardians is the latest first person shooter in the hugely popular Xbox-only Halo series, following in the footsteps of Halo 4, which was released back in 2012. The plot essentially follows two fireteams of supersoldiers – Blue Team, lead by popular lead character Master Chief, disappears with the purpose of tracking down AI Cortana, while Fireteam Osiris are sent to retrieve them.

The game includes many of the core features of the Halo franchise, which is good news for fans of the series, while introducing new content that should help attract new fans. One of the new additions to the Halo series is ‘Spartan abilities’ which looks to replace the ‘armour abilities’ used in previous Halo games and provide increased movement and can contextually be used for attack, defence or evasion. You can also aim down the sights of your gun too – a feature limited to certain weapons in previous Halo games.

Best Xbox One games: Star Wars: Battlefront

Get Star Wars Battlefront on Amazon

Star Wars: Battlefront is the latest and probably best Star Wars game available. Rebels and the Empire are pitted against each other in constant online action, with some matches featuring up to fourty players. There are exciting new game modes available including dog fighting in X Wings and TIE Fighters, as well as standard game types like team deathmatches. With constant upgrades and powerups becoming available throughout the game, gameplay is ever-evolving.

The best part about the game? Players will find powerups dotted throughout each match, with one particular powerup allowing players to play as 'Heroes' like Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia just to name a few. These characters are stronger than the average player, and offer a number of special abilities which could help turn the tide of any match.

The only downside to the game is that there is no offline story mode - the game revolves around online gameplay, which means it may not be ideal for those that aren't good at online gaming.

Best Xbox One games: Fallout 4

Get Fallout 4 now on Amazon.

Fallout 4 is one of the best games out at the moment, and transports players to a post-apocalyptic open world called 'the commonwealth'. You'll encounter other survivors as well as hugely mutated beasts like the Deathclaw (you'll understand when you play) and with limited ammo in a post-apocalyptic world, it's not just a case of shooting your enemies down - although that's pretty fun too.

It's not just about killing enemies either - pretty much anything in Fallout 4 can be salvaged for scrap, which is then used to upgrade your guns and armour. It can also be used to build settlements and fortresses to protect communities of survivors that look to you for protection.

Fallout 4 is a game where you'll head to a location for a specific quest, but more often than not you'll find yourself becoming distracted by various side quests and randomly generated events throughout the game, all of which create a game that will take 100s of hours to fully complete.
