What is the Lightning dock connector?
The Lightning dock connector is the new physical port found on the iPhone 5 and latest generation of iPod Touch and iPod Nano. The new connector uses eight pins instead of 30.
Apple said the Lightning dock connector is thinner, lighter, smaller, more durable and better than before. Lightning is all-digital and reversible so it doesn't matter which way round you plug it in.
What Lightning cable comes with the iPhone 5, iPod Nano and iPod Touch?
All of the above devices will come with a Lightning to USB cable in the box.
What version of USB does Lightning support?
After a little digging we've discovered that the Lightning to USB cable is USB 2.0. This is a bit of a let-down since USB 3.0 is significantly faster.
Can I still use my existing 30-pin accessories with the iPhone 5 Lightning dock connector?
You might still be able to use your current speaker docks, charging stations. However, Apple has warned that "some 30-pin accessories are not supported".
What Hi-Fi said: "it looks like the new Apple connection doesn't output an analogue signal, so any kit that takes an analogue audio signal – and that's most of them – wouldn't work."
Our advice is to check with the manufacturer before making any purchases.
How do I use the Lightning dock connector with 30-pin accessories?
If you're confident that your accessory will work with the Lightning dock then you'll need to buy a Lightning to 30-pin adapter from Apple.
How much does a Lightning to 30-pin adapter cost?
The Lightning to 30-pin adapter is available from Apple for £25. You can also get a version with a cable for £30.
Can I buy an additional Lightning to USB cable?
Yes, these are available from Apple for £15.
