Power-saving tips for your home cinema

July 11, 2009

Green computingLarge HD televisions are voracious electricity consumers. Some 50in plasmas demand in excess of 400W of power when turned on. That's more than a good-size, modern refrigerator. Here are some tips to reduce the drain.

To minimise your home-theatre bills, you need to examine both what you buy and how you use it. The good news is that you don't have to cut back on your entertainment hours in order to save money and to reduce your carbon footprint.

With PC PSUs, less can be more expensive

December 22, 2008

Power is the talk of the town in the PC industry, and for good reason.

Nobody wants their desktop computer to double their electricity bill. But as much as we throw various power tweaks, myths, and all other kinds of electronic hocus-pocus back-and-forth, it's important to sit back for a moment and think about the core of your system: the power supply.

3G iPhone ruins Apple's green credentials

June 26, 2008

Apple has missed a “big chance” to advance green credentials by “not improving the environmental performance of the new version of the iPhone”, says eco campaign force Greenpeace.

The campaigner’s Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics ranks 18 electronics firms – in the mobile phone, computer, TV and games console markets - by how green their products are, and their practices on toxic chemicals and recycling.

How Apple, Google & MS can save the world

April 24, 2008

Just in case you've suddenly emerged from a coma and hadn't noticed, Tuesday was Earth Day here on our planet. And it seems like everybody is putting on their green. Even the US government has a site celebrating its efforts to save the earth.

While tech companies are certainly puffing up their environmental street cred, they could be doing more. In fact, I have a few suggestions for what the leading tech companies can do to save the planet.

Go green: power your PC with just 9 Watts

April 1, 2008

In the future, we'll all work on tower-free workstations, hooked up to IT Support's central server like dribbling, brain-dead human fuel cells from 'The Matrix'. And, like the second and third installments of that trilogy, it will be rubbish.

With no opportunity to fill our hard drives with jpegs, music files and 'hilarious' video, and with the all-seeing eye of the fat controllers able to daily comb through our 'PCs', we'll have no alternative but to work. Hard. All the live-long day.

Green failure on climate change

February 29, 2008

Forget about carbon emissions, there’s enough hot air blown out over climate change to heat every home in Sheffield. But for all the blather and political posturing no one actually took any notice of the UK's first Energy Saving Day, which ended with no noticeable reduction in the nation's electricity usage.

E-Day sounds like a great idea, except for the fact that in order to save energy its organisers forgot to tell anyone about it.

HP has announced plans to reduce the energy consumption of its PCs by 25 percent within two years.

The green reality

September 18, 2007

The trouble with green computing initiatives is that it's often hard to separate marketing from reality. While most people would like to think recent efforts by the world's biggest IT firms to ‘go green' have been inspired by a burning desire to save the planet, a cynic would suggest an ulterior motive.

That's because there's real marketing value in what's known as ‘corporate social responsibility'. If companies don't promote their green credentials they'll miss out on plenty of opportunities to tell the world that they're ethically sound participants in what's become a hot trend over the past couple of years.

Blackle: Google search for the green and depressed

July 20, 2007

Let me introduce you to Blackle. Set up by Australian firm 'Heap Media', Blackle is the 'black Google'.

Now, this may be outdated colonial stereotyping, but when I hear that an Australian firm has set up the 'black' anything, I immediately tense up and reach for my copy of To kill a mockingbird (alright, John Grisham's A time to kill). But there's no need to worry (on that score).

Bye Bye Standby dual plug kit

July 4, 2007

Another approach to getting out of the energy-draining standby habit (URC 8308 Kameleon universal remote control) is the Bye Bye Standby dual plug kit.

This pair of Smart Socket plugs is rated for up to 1,000W power loads. Attach the accompanying power pad to a convenient wall and give it a nudge on your way to bed to switch off both devices without having to bend down to skirting board level.
