The PC version of Activision's heavily hyped first-person military shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - officially available in less than 24 hours - may go down as one of the most contentious launches in games history. Who would have thought it?
The game has been mired in controversy of late, a muddle of pros and cons batted around by hundreds of thousands of advocates as well as detractors on message boards and social network sites and pithy missive multiplication mediums such as Twitter.

I want to like Microsoft's Games for Windows. The application costs me nothing and has a sleek, unobtrusive overlay. It consolidates my Windows and Xbox game accounts, lets me access useful services and provides a one-stop shop for updates, downloads and news. Just one thing is missing: games.
I've written about this before, but the problem with the Games for Windows pedigree is that it's a Lamborghini in a land without fuel pumps. Since its debut two years ago, the LIVE component has inspired only 24 games, nine so far in 2009 - the sort of year-on-year improvement that might have looked impressive three or four decades ago. Yes, the 'Games for Windows' brand gets slapped on two or three times as many titles, but it's functionally superfluous. It's like putting a 'meat' sticker on a cut of beef.

Not one week into its UK sales debut, Sony's re-imagined, slim-sized PlayStation 3 is already enjoying massive sales, up nearly 1,000 percent on standard PS3 sales the week before. The PS3 Slim outsold the Xbox 360 as well as both the Wii and DS Lite by a striking three-to-one ratio.
The UK and Denmark market-researcher Chart-Track, which reported that figure, told market watcher MCV: "The sales increase is very impressive."

Elonex, a company generally known for its ONE line of netbooks, is using the IFA show to launch the iGame, a combined iPod/iPhone charger, media streaming dock and games console.
You simply slot your Apple iPhone or iPod (a good range of iPod touches, nanos, minis and classics are supported) into the iGame, and you can play movies and music stored on the handset on a large-screen display. But Elonex is pushing the gaming side more heavily. Echoing the motion-sensitive mechanism of the Nintendo Wii, the iGame's controller can be swung around to imitate the movements of a tennis racket, dart, bowling ball or so on.

Sony has trimmed the size and price of its PlayStation 3 games console, hoping to boost a slumping market with a sexier product. But the announcement follows news that video game sales are rapidly declining, and the PlayStation 3 is at the bottom of the heap.
The NPD Group reports the PlayStation 3 moving only 122,000 units in July, a mere 14,000 more than its predecessor, the PlayStation 2. This is sad news given that the PlayStation 2 is nine years old and totally outdated in its hardware. For comparison's sake, the Microsoft Xbox 360 moved 203,000 units, and the Nintendo Wii moved 253,00.

On a recent excavation, Chris Locke unearthed an amazingly well-preserved fossil of Hilarofustis atarium, commonly referred to as the Atari joystick. This is the most recent "discovery" he has made, but among his Modern Fossils collection you can also spot long-dead boom boxes, aged iPods, obsolete hard drives and ancient phones.
Yep, technology gets old, fast. While most formerly cutting-edge tech ends up in a pile of yesterday's trash, Locke does his best to preserve specimens the best way he knows how: by burying them.

At E3 2009, Microsoft blew the media away with Project Natal, a motion-sensing device that allows you to control video games and Xbox 360 menus with your body instead of a peripheral controller. But the demonstration left some crucial unanswered questions about Microsoft Natal and its future under the Xbox brand.
What we do know is that Natal gives you voice and full-body motion control over your on-screen avatar using an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, and custom processor running proprietary software, and Project Natal will work with current XBox 360 systems. Microsoft also released the Project Natal software development kit (SDK) to game makers who want to incorporate Natal functionality into their products.

A stunning in-game video of The Last Guardian, the hugely anticipated PS3 sequel to Shadow of the Colossus, has been shown to journalists at the E3 games show.
Team ICO, the developers of the award-winning games title Shadow of the Colossus and its predecessor, Ico, have given away very little about The Last Guardian. The game had a working title of 'Project Trico', as the closing installment of a loose trilogy of games that begun with Ico.

The E3 games industry event in Los Angeles always throws up some interesting ideas, but it's pretty unusual for Microsoft to be behind one of the most interesting.
In fact, it's interesting enough that film director Steven Spielberg told the BBC that he thinks it will change the shape of gaming.

Microsoft's splashy, slightly angular, just-divulged Zune HD will play films, surf the web and pick up digital radio feeds, but all I want to know is whether it will play games. And Microsoft isn't talking... yet.
No one's touting the Zune HD as a gaming platform at this point. But it could be a gaming device, and I'd bet my life that it'll be at least some kind. In my view, Microsoft needed to announce the new mobile part's existence beyond the breathless clamour of the Electronic Entertainment Expo next week to avoid branding it a games-focused device. Which it isn't.

According to an NPD Group report, 53 percent of US consumers have been to the movies in the last six months, but 63 percent have played a video game.
While NPD says video gaming still lags considerably behind music listening (a whopping 94 percent) it benefits from new play outlets, including gamers on social networks (10 percent) and playing downloadable games (5 percent - up 2 percent on last year).

Instant Action is that rare site: one that offers free high-end browser-based games for both PC and Mac gamers. These titles offer 3D graphics and a diverse gaming experience. Instant Action offers 3D puzzlers, futuristic first person shooters and tank combat simulators, as well as 2D action games.
Instant Action.com is a tempting proposition, but it seems to be a well-kept secret. Why are its game lobbies like wandering through a digital ghost town? A populated set of servers could go a long way to entice more players to come. So why aren't they populated?

Sony, the company behind the PlayStation 3 and PSP gaming devices, has laid into the Nintendo DSi handheld console, saying "there isn't much new with the DSi", which "continues to be limited" and appeals only to "the kids market".
According to Engadget, SCEA director of hardware marketing John Koller's blast on the Nintendo DSi also goes on to suggest that the PSP's upcoming line-up of games is superior, citing PSP games such as Assassin's Creed, LittleBigPlanet and Dissidia: Final Fantasy.

Hundreds of Nintendo Wii owners may claim the Wii Fit is the ideal companion when it comes to losing weight, but can gaming really help you win the fight against the flab?
PopCap, the maker of PC game Bejeweled Twist, says it will. The gaming company conducted a trial into gaming and weight loss in January this year, and is so encouraged by the findings that it intends to continue its research.
