Asus S101 Eee PC comes to UK

October 15, 2008

Asus, maker of the original mini laptop, has announced UK pricing and availability of a new Windows XP model in its Eee PC range. The Asus S101 Eee PC will cost £449 and come with 32GB of memory.

The Asus S101 runs off a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, has a 10.2in screen, a battery life of 5 hours between charges and weighs approximately 1.06kg.

In common with many other 'netbooks', the Asus S101 has an SSD (solid state drive) rather than a hard disk drive. This keeps the weight down and is less easy to damage than a hard disk-based laptop, since an SSD has no moving parts.

Its 16GB SSD is complemented by a 20GB secure online archive where users are encouraged to back up their data. A 16GB Secure Digital removable memory card is also supplied, making a total supplied memory of 32GB.

Asus couldn't resist trying to impress us with some jargon, though. The Taiwanese company claims it achieves the battery life of five hours by assigning power to the current tasks based on the user's preferences. An EPU (energy processing unit) "accurately detects the user's power requirements and makes the necessary power adjustments", we're told. This is facilitated by a Power4 Gear Hybrid application within the Asus S101's Super Hybrid Engine (SHE, for short).

The result is that the battery lasts 35 percent longer than it would have done without this power management.

The Asus S101 Eee PC comes in a mocha-coloured case and costs £449 inc VAT. Aimed at the fashion-conscious, the S101 has crystal-edged hinges.
