  A portable USB fuel cell promises to charge your smartphone for up to two weeks without going near a wall socket. Lilliputian Systems says its portable fuel cell will provide juice for your smartphone a dozen times before running out -- and then you just need to buy a replacement cartridge.

  ZeroTouch, the inexpensive technology that turns regular displays into touchscreens, can be fitted to larger screens, is more responsive and is almost ready for commercialization, according to researchers working on it.

  Researchers have turned a display annoyance into a way to show two different images simultaneously. When an LCD is tilted, colors change and become difficult to see, but with Dual View from Microsoft Research Asia different images and video can be shown.

• News: Whiptail whips up modularly scalable all-flash storage array

  Solid-state storage array maker Whiptail announced its first modular, scalable all-flash array with up to 72TB of capacity.

• News: Seagate to demo 12Gbps SAS SSD

  Seagate said it will demonstrate a 12Gbps SAS solid-state drive (SSD) at the SCSI Trade Association Technology Showcase this week.

• News: OCZ releases performance-boosting SSD firmware, new 64GB drive

  OCZ today announced a firmware upgrade that boosts performance about 15MB/sec on its Vertex 4 SATA 3.0 SSDs. The company also touted a new 64GB Vertex 4 SSD aimed at mobile applications or for use as a boot drive.

• News: iCloud storage upgrade extended for MobileMe users

  MobileMe users are getting three extra months of free iCloud storage upgrades as they make the transition to the newer service. In its FAQ explaining the transition, Apple quietly extended the deadline to September 30. The change was first reported by Japanese blog Macotakara.

• News: Successor to DDR3 memory reaching devices next year, Micron says

  Micron on Monday said that DDR4 memory -- the successor to DDR3 DRAM -- will reach computers next year, and that the company has started shipping samples of the upcoming DDR memory type.

• News: Windows 8 Dumps Default DVD Playback

  Physical discs took another step towards extinction late Thursday after Microsoft announced that DVD playback will not be available by default on Windows 8. The new move adds another wrinkle to Microsoft's previous disclosure that Windows Media Center, the company's PC-based entertainment hub software, would not be included in default configurations of Windows 8. Windows Media Player will continue to be offered in all versions of Windows 8, but without DVD playback capability.

• News: Men chuck or reformat old devices more so than women

  A study commissioned by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICOI) has revealed that just 11 per cent of 230 discarded second hand hard drives contained personal information.
