Opinion: Hack or No Hack, the Linux Kernel Is Well-Protected
It was shocking to learn yesterday that Kernel.org was hacked last month. News like that is routine in the world at large, but not in the home of the all-important heart of Linux.

News: Linux Foundation chief: 'You are an idiot' if you don't give back to open source
Linux is the granddaddy of all open source projects, the blueprint for the decentralized development processes. And some of those who use the Linux code, free for the taking, don't give back in equal measure. Still, the time for cajoling those users -- even commercial projects like Ubuntu leader Canonical -- into participating is over, says Jim Zemlin, executive director of the nonprofit Linux Foundation.

Opinion: Cleaning Malware: Slave Drive or Bootable CD?
Kent knows that you can better scan and clean an infected PC's hard drive by not booting from it. He asked the Antivirus & Security Software forum if it's better to boot from a Linux CD and run security software from that, or to remove the hard drive, and attach it as a secondary drive to another computer.

Keen observers may recall that Asus's debut of the Padfone back at Computex in May was accompanied by another, albeit less-trumpeted announcement. It even announced that Yahoo had collected some top Hadoop engineers and spun off a new company, Hortonworks. Hortonworks hopes to sell Hadoop consulting services to enterprises.
